This is directed at teachers, specialized educators, social workers and all responsible for educational activities and are facing problems of didactics and pedagogical methods with respect to the prevention of AIDS.

  2. Regional Workshop on Preventive Education Against HIV/AIDS for Women's Grassroot Organisations in Africa: final report

    This is a report of a workshop for Grassroots Women's Organisation in Africa and was organised in Abidjan from 7-11 September 1998 by UNESCO in co-operation with UNAIDS Regional HIV Development Project. The overall objectives were to reduce the rate of HIV transmission among African women by rendering them capable of protecting themselves through a reinforced awareness, and by giving them appropriate knowledge and skills. This report is written in English and French.

  3. HIV/AIDS Preventive Education: A practical Guide for Co-ordinators of Women's Grassroot Organisation

    This UNESCO guide is a collection of examples of "best practices" in HIV/AIDS preventive education for African women especially the illiterate and the semi-literate. It is the result of contributions from some twenty coordinators of African women's grassroots organisations, specialists and national and international experts involved in HIV/AIDS preventive education.

  4. HIV/AIDS/STDs education for prevention

    The contents of this book are drawn from contributions to the Global Conference on School Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention. This paper examines problems and prospects for participation in HIV prevention strategies among commercial sex workers in Madras. It is based on the experiences of a pilot project established by the Tamil Nadu State Government AIDS Cell and WHO.

  7. Black Communities' Belief in "AIDS as Genocide": a barrier to overcome for HIV prevention

    An article on the belief that AIDS is a form of genocide targeted at the black population is prevalent in black communities in the United States. Public health authorities are distrusted, in part because of the legacy of the Tuskegee study of untreated syphilis, a perceived racist experiment. For effective interventions to prevent the transmission of HIV in black communities, genocidal fears and beliefs must be addressed and black community leaders should be involved in planning and implementation.

    This is a cross-sectional study to determine modern contraceptive use among women aged between 15 and 19 years. This study was carried out between September and October of 1991 in five East, Central and Southern African countries, both in urban and rural areas.

  9. Health seeking behaviour and the control of sexually transmitted disease

    What people do when they have symptoms or suspicion of a sexually transmitted disease (STD) has major implications for transmission and, consequently, for disease control. Delays in seeking and obtaining diagnosis and treatment can allow for continued transmission and the greater probability of adverse sequelae. An understanding of health seeking behaviour is therefore important if STD control programmes are to be effective. However, taboos and stigma related to sex and STD in most cultures mean that gaining a true picture is difficult and requires considerable cultural sensitivity. …

  10. The Narrative of AIDS Among the Tonga of Zambia

    The Tonga of Southern Zambia usually refer to a traditional disease, Kahungo, when talking about AIDS. Such an association of AIDS with a traditional disease could easily be interpreted as a cultural obstacle to an understanding of AIDS and thus to a change of behaviour. However, a close investigation shows that this association is not the result of categorical thinking, but rather of narrative logic. What people are actually articulating when they associate AIDS with kahungo is a narrative about order, disorder and respect for existing rules and values of the society. …

    An AIDS education programme was developed and evaluated in a high school in a socio-economically disadvantaged, urban, African area in South Africa. The programme, which addressed the whole school community, aimed to raise awareness about AIDS using a variety of educational methods and operating through a number of channels.   12. Talking about AIDS in Schools: An AIDS Workshop Design for School Principals, Administrators and Teachers

    This is a document which gives guidance to a facilitator on AIDS prevention education. It gives guidance on how to design and conduct an advocacy workshop so as to initiate a process by which preventive education on AIDS/STD for adolescents will have acceptance and the full support from school principals, administrators, teachers and parents of secondary school students. The four modules covered are: Talking about HIV/AIDS, Targeting adolescent boys and girls, Understanding adolescence and Module 4 is on Developing Methodologies.
