Her Royal Highness Princess Dana Firas of Jordan, President of the Board of Directors of Petra National Trust and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Cultural Heritage, participated in the 6th Mediterranean Tourism Forum that was held on 15 February 2019 in Malta.

The Mediterranean Tourism Forum is organized by the Mediterranean Tourism Foundation dedicated to the promotion of tourism and the preservation of tourism sites in the Mediterranean region. This annual event brings together political leaders and other stakeholders holding an interest in Mediterranean tourism. Within the framework of the Forum, representatives of governments, chief executive officers, leaders of international organizations and non-governmental organizations, cultural figures, members of the civil society and intellectuals come together during two days to define priorities of Mediterranean tourism agendas. The 6th edition was entitled “Mediterranean STARS”.

Committed to the preservation of Petra, Princess Dana Firas, President of the Board of Directors of Petra National Trust and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Cultural Heritage, recalled in her speech that tourism offers great opportunities but it can also be a threat. “Today, we have a good opportunity to review our tourism policies and ensure that we balance the requirements of protection and preservation with the demands for tourism development to ensure a rewarding experience for visitors and residents”. In addition, she called for getting closer to organizations such as UNESCO to develop a new type of tourism.

UNESCO has been committed to the preservation of World Heritage for a long time. More recently, the Organization integrates to its protection mission of cultural and natural assets, the management and development of sustainable and responsible tourism on World Heritage properties. This new approach aims at fostering awareness, capacity and balanced participation of all stakeholders, in order to protect the properties and their Outstanding Universal Value.
