Just launched at COP24: Video tutorial on integrating education for sustainable development in cities

20 December 2018

UNESCO has just launched a video tutorial on how to implement education for sustainable development at the local level. The tutorial was presented at the 2019 UN Climate Change Conference (COP24).

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) empowers people to change the way they think and work towards a sustainable future. One way to promote ESD at the local level is through lifelong learning programmes that impart new knowledge, skills and attitudes to learners of all ages and from all backgrounds.

The video tutorial that premiered at COP24 focuses in particular on how learning cities – which UNESCO defines as ‘a city that enhances individual empowerment and social inclusion, economic development and cultural prosperity, and sustainable development’ – can integrate ESD into existing programmes. The tutorial addresses why and how learning cities should promote ESD.

A number of UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) member cities have already begun to develop strategies to enhance ESD in their communities. The tutorial, which is available in English, French and Spanish, and which was developed with the generous support of the Government of Japan and through funding from the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for ESD, will provide local leaders with further strategies for raising awareness of climate change, pollution, related mental and physical health risks, and the need for safeguarding the environment.

The tutorial for implementing ESD follows a series of seven video tutorials on how to build a learning city, which were launched in October 2018. More information on the learning cities video tutorials can be found at http://uil.unesco.org/lifelong-learning/learning-cities/unesco-launches-video-tutorials-how-build-learning-city.
