Networking for Geohazard Risk Reduction

UNESCO works closely with national, scientific and research institutions, UNESCO centres and chairs and promotes inter-institutional and regional and global cooperation by establishing platforms/networks that promote knowledge exchange.

In particular, UNESCO, through international scientific collaboration and its different academic networks and programmes, forms a platform for knowledge exchange and scientific cooperation on geohazards. Issues like data quality and exchange, early warning, hazard mapping and vulnerability assessments are often the topic of the networks' meeting.

UNESCO projects

  • International Consortium on Landslides (ICL): The ICL is a non-governmental and non-profit scientific organization established in Kyoto with help of UNESCO, which focuses on landslide research. It is committed to integrating landslide sciences and technology within the appropriate cultural and social contexts, to coordinating international landslide expertise and to develop landslide monitoring networks in the long term.
  • International Platform for Reducing Earthquake Disaster (IPRED): IPRED is a platform for collaborative research, training and education in the field of seismology and earthquake engineering that aims to reduce disasters due to earthquakes, with a focus on earthquake-resistant buildings and housing. Additionally, a system was established through IPRED to dispatch experts to earthquake stricken countries in order to carry out post-earthquake field investigations and draw lessons for future risk reduction.
  • Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR): UNESCO is a member of the PEDRR, a global partnership comprised of UN agencies, international and regional NGOs as well as specialized institutes. It promotes ecosystems management as the key strategy to reduce disaster-related risk, improve local resilience and adapt to a changing climate. PEDRR promotes partnerships at global, regional and national levels and fosters collaboration between environmental science and development communities.
  • Reducing Earthquake Losses (REL): The REL scientific programmes were jointly launched by UNESCO and the US Geological Survey (USGS) in earthquake-prone regions such as the Eastern Mediterranean Region (RELEMR), the South Asia Region (RELSAR), and the Northeast Asia Region (RELNAR), to foster data exchange, conduct joint activities and experiments and improve hazard assessments in the region.
  • Global Alliance for Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience in the Education Sector (GADRRRES): A comprehensive framework for school safety was adopted in 2014 by GADRRRES, which is chaired by UNESCO.
