This report documents findings of a rapid assessment on existing implementation linkages between HIV responses on one hand, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) on the other, in four southern African countries: Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland and Zambia. The review was conducted in July 2014 by consultants commissioned by SAfAIDS and WaterAid. This rapid assessment is a forerunner of a number of pilot activities to be conducted in Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland and Zambia to explore how HIV and WASH can be better integrated.
HIV knowledge is commonly measured in HIV prevention research and program evaluations, but rigorous measurement standards are not always applied. Using item response theory methods, we examined the psychometric functioning of five commonly used HIV knowledge questions in five countries with varying HIV prevalence. We evaluated the internal consistency and measurement invariance of the items. The items performed poorly in all samples and the scale as a whole did not perform equally across samples. …
Schools are an important social setting that can be used to improve community health in general and the health of schoolchildren in particular. The Health-Promoting Schools Initiative is one of the measures implemented through joint planning between different sectors to enhance the quality of life of the Omani population. This document outlines the initiative in Oman from 2004 to 2008. It describes the health status of school-age children and the initiative in terms of mechanisms, tools that were used in improving intersectoral action, monitoring and evaluation, and lessons learnt.

When men don’t share the responsibilities or benefits and burdens of sexual and reproductive health, women bear the majority of the responsibility for their own and their families’ sexual and reproductive health. This approach exacerbates gender inequalities and leads to poor health outcomes. An unprecedented number of young children in Sub-Saharan Africa are being adversely affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, yet programs specifically designed to meet the developmental needs of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) from birth to age 8 are rare. Donors at every level are retreating on funding commitments to HIV, and organizations working at the intersection of AIDS and rights are facing overall funding challenges. This briefing paper reports the findings of a 2012 study on HIV and human rights donor trends in Southern Africa, commissioned by the Open Society Foundations. It identifies opportunities to leverage donor support for HIV and human rights organizations, and for donor collaboration that can support them in the current funding environment.
