    There is inadequate information on the burden of HIV infection, and on the prevalence of the risk factors for HIV transmission among University students in Uganda. Routine sources of data such as HIV surveillance and national population-based AIDS Indicator surveys do not provide information on institutional populations such as University students.   4. HIV, syphilis infection, and risky sexual behaviors among male university students who have sex with men in Beijing, China: a cross-sectional study

    Young male university students who have sex with men are at high risk of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The authors conducted a cross-sectional survey to assess the prevalence of risky sexual behaviors, HIV, and syphilis among male university students who have sex with men in Beijing, China; and to identify risk factors for unprotected anal intercourse (UAI). Among 157 study participants, HIV and syphilis prevalence were 2.5% and 7.0%, respectively. The authors found a high prevalence of UAI in the study population. …

    The importance of Emergency contraception (EC) is evident in preventing unintended pregnancies and its ill consequences like unintended child delivery or unsafe abortion, which are the most common causes of maternal mortality.   6. University students and HIV in Namibia: an HIV prevalence survey and a knowledge and attitude survey

    With an overall adult HIV prevalence of 15.3%, Namibia is facing one of the largest HIV epidemics in Africa. Young people aged 20 to 34 years constitute one of the groups at highest risk of HIV infection in Namibia. However, little is known about the impact of HIV on this group and its access to healthcare. The purpose of this study was to estimate HIV prevalence, to assess the knowledge of and attitudes towards HIV/AIDS, and to assess access to healthcare among university students in Namibia.

  7. An addendum for higher education and technical and vocational education and training to the HIV and AIDS strategic plan 2008/2012

    The purpose of writing the addendum is to give visibility of Higher Education and Technical and Vocational Education Training in the ESSP - HA (2008 – 2012). The focus of this addendum is HE and TVET institutions, a population which is at risk for and vulnerable to HIV and STIs infection. The main focus of the addendum will be on four main areas or themes that will address risk and vulnerability reduction for both school and workplace populations, namely: prevention education; care and support services; impact mitigation; enabling environment.

  8. Enabling journalism educators to support comprehensive governance responses to HIV/AIDS and other development challenges through journalism education: assessment of the current status of HIV/AIDS teaching in four journalism schools in South Africa

    This report provides: 1. Analysis and reflection of current approaches to include HIV/AIDS and other development issues in journalism education at participating institutions. 2. Teaching approaches at the participating institutions with potential to prepare journalism students for their roles in democratic process. 3. Recommendations, based on the assessment results, on how HIV/AIDS can form part of curricula. 4. An outline of a proposed curriculum that uses HIV and AIDS issues as a basis for exploring civic-minded approaches to journalistic practice based on the assessment findings.

  11. Revue des stratégies de communication lors des séances d'IEC VIH-sida en milieu scolaire et/ou universitaire au Bénin : méthodes, messages, impacts et perspectives

    L'objectif principal de cette recherche est d'étudier et d'analyser l'adaptabilité et les impacts des campagnes ou stratégies de communication des séances d'information, d'éducation et de communication (IEC-VIH-SIDA) en milieu scolaire et/ou universitaire en rapport avec le contexte socioculturel béninois Dans cette optique, l'accent sera surtout mis sur la revue des différentes séances d'IEC en matière de VIH/SIDA effectuées en présentant les stratégies étudiées, les supports utilisés et les messages transmis et en procédant par la suite à une analyse des données recueillies.

  14. Experience of sexual coercion and risky sexual behavior among Ugandan university students

    The aim of this study was to assess the association between the experience of sexual coercion and risky sexual behavior among university students of both sexes in Uganda. In 2005, 980 (80%) out of a total of 1,220 students enrolled in Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda participated in a self-administered questionnaire covering sociodemographic and religious factors, social capital, mental health, alcohol use, and sexual behavior. A validated scale of six items was used to assess the experience of sexual coercion. …
