    This guide covers basic ideas on community mobilisation, youth participation and participatory tools with examples from Africa. It aims to equip users with competencies to develop the capacity of communities and young people to work together to address sexual and reproductive health (including HIV) needs of young people in Uganda. It provides tools and processes for mobilising young people and communities at various stages and planning activities for HIV prevention.

    Stigma has been identified as a complex, diverse and deeply rooted phenomenon that is dynamic in different cultural settings. As a collective social process rather than a mere reflection of an individual's subjective behaviour, it operates by producing and reproducing social structures of power, hierarchy, class and exclusion and by transforming difference (class, race, ethnicity, health status, sexual orientation and gender) into inequality. This document is a literature review about stigma in every sense of the word.

  8. Interim strategic plan for multi-sectoral for HIV response in Ethiopia (2009-2010/11)

    This Interim SPM covers only the period 2009-2010 in order to create opportunities to align strategies with other major sector (HSDP) and development (PASDEP) plans which also end in 2010. During the interim period, multi-sectoral actors at all levels working on HIV issues are expected to develop and implement their respective plans based on this SPM. During the Interim period a number of structural changes within the sector will be given chance to settle. A number of planned national surveys will also provide more accurate information to develop a five-year plan.

    Both general education and HIV and AIDS-related education have a role to play in protecting girls from infection. Two recent estimates of the scale of the effect are similar and suggest that each additional year of education leads to a 6.7% (Uganda) or 7% (South Africa) reduction in likelihood of acquiring infection. The protective effects of education may be particularly strong for girls.
