  2. Population, development and HIV/AIDS with particular emphasis on poverty. The concise report

    The AIDS pandemic has gained momentum during the past quarter century, expanding to all regions of the world. AIDS affects both the rich and the poor, but the hardest-hit countries are among the poorest in the world. Unless more vigorous actions are undertaken to combat the disease and its effects, the HIV/AIDS epidemic portends a grim future for many countries, especially the poorest countries. The report concludes that the most effective approach to thwarting the HIV/AIDS epidemic is to implement a combination of strategies that reduce risks, diminish vulnerability and mitigate impact.

  3. A measure of commitment: women's sexual and reproductive health risk index for Sub-Saharan Africa

    In 2008 the number of African women who died from pregnancy and child birth was much higher than the number of casualties from all the major conflicts in Africa combined. Maternal mortality continues to be the major cause of death among women of reproductive age (15-49) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This report looks at the performance of sub Saharan African countries in meeting reproductive health targets in 47 countries and ranks them using a set of ten indicators in order of the highest to lowest risk. …

    The aim of the media scan - which is the focus of this report - is to provide a context for the Siyam'kela fieldwork, so that the reader has a snapshot view of how HIV/AIDS was portrayed in the popular television, radio and print media in South Africa at the time that the field research was undertaken. This report provides an executive summary of the process and findings of the media scan conducted between January and March 2003.

  6. It's Time to Talk About Sex: Sexual Rights are Essential to Achieving the MDGs

    Share-Net recently hosted a meeting encouraging participants to talk about sex. Specifically, it examined the connections between sexual rights and each of the MDGs. The meeting involved Share-Net's members (experts in SRHR and HIV/AIDS) but also experts from other MDG areas who shared insights from their own fields. This document is the result of an afternoon of discussion in eight groups, each focusing on a different MDG.

    Malawi has had a rising population of orphans and vulnerable children who are reported to lack care, food, educational opportunities and adult role models.   9. Service providers working together to help children in the time of HIV and AIDS

    The combined effects of HIV and AIDS and poverty make many children vulnerable. Through their work, teachers, health workers, home-based carers, community workers, volunteers and social workers come into regular contact with children. These service providers recognise that this puts them in a unique position to identify vulnerable children, and where necessary, connect them up with other services. This booklet highlights some of the ways service providers in South Africa are responding to the many children in need.

    Poverty and limited access to health care, education, and paid employement create situations that make young people most vulnerable to HIV infection. This paper examines the importance of developing strategies to involve young people in income-generating activities to fight HIV and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. These strategies support young people in gaining important skills and earning income to reduce their own poverty. The strategies also help foster a sense of hope and purpose in young people as they contribute to addressing this social problem. …

    This Report discusses the state of human development in Lesotho at the turn of this new millennium. Almost seven years into this century, Lesotho has been faced with a combination of problems that do not seem to be amenable to easy solution, and that threaten to hold back, even reverse, its socio -economic progress. The nexus of the mutually reinforcing effects of chronic poverty, inequality and food insecurity is being compounded by the impact of the pervasive and growing HIV epidemic.
