    Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive human rights issue with public health consequences. The growing body of evidence on violence and HIV/AIDS continues to confirm that violence is a lead factor in the 'feminization' of the global AIDS epidemic and the disproportionately higher rates of HIV-infection among women and girls, who now represent at least half of those infected worldwide and about 60% of those infected in sub-Saharan Africa.   3. The Economic impact of HIV/AIDS in Botswana: Final report

    This report focuses on the economic impacts of AIDS at both macro- and micro-levels, and includes an assessment of the likely impact on the key macroeconomic variables mentioned above, as well as the fiscal impact, and the impact on households and firms. One of the key objectives of the study is to update a previous exercise, undertaken in 1999-2000, which examined the likely macroeconomic impact of HIV/AIDS (BIDPA 2000).

  4. Review and appraisal of the progress made in achieving the goals and objectives of the programme of action of the International Conference on Population and Development: the 2004 report

    This report is based on the 2nd quinquennial review and appraisal for the thirty-seventh session of the commission in 2004. It is divided into an introduction and seven chapters. The first two sections provide an overview of population levels and trends, and population growth, structure and distribution in the world and its major regions. These are followed by four sections focusing on clusters of issues: reproductive health and rights and mortality, international migration and population programmes. The final section summarizes the major conclusion of the report.

  5. Myanmar: reproductive health baseline community survey 2002

    The report presents findings of the 2002 reproductive health baseline community survey carried out in townships under the UNFPA project. The main objectives of the survey is to find out knowledge, attitude and practice related to reproductive health, STD, HIV/AIDS, maternal health and contraception. The study will provide baseline information for evaluating the progress in the level of knowledge and behaviour change on the reproductive health in those township communities at the end of the project in 2005.

  6. Indonesia demographic and health survey 2002-2003

    The main objective of the 2002-2003 IDHS is to provide policy-makers and programme managers in population and health with detailed information on population, family planning, and health. In particular, the 2002-2003 IDHs collected information on female respondents' socio-economic background, fertility levels, marriage and sexual activity, fertility preferences, knowledge and use of family planning methods, breastfeeding practices, childhood and adult mortality, including maternal mortality, maternal and child health and awareness and behaviour regarding AIDS and other STIs in Indonesia.

    The paper provides a synthesis of the findings from a 13-country study of adolescent and youth reproductive health issues, policies, and programmes in Asia and Near East (ANE) region.     This paper reviews the status of the demographic transition worldwide, discusses factors associated with fertility decline, and highlights challenges associated with completing the transition in developing countries. It is intended to help policymakers both here and abroad to better understand the need for continued efforts to reduce fertility and population growth rates, even in the wake of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

  14. HIV/AIDS awareness and behaviour

    The publication highlights findings from a series of a national demographic and health surveys that are directly relevant to AIDS epidemic. It provides a picture of HIV-and-AIDS related awareness and behaviour across countries and population groups, age and gender. Information about risk-related behaviours, their determinants and the context within which they occur has direct relevance targeting of AIDS prevention efforts.

  15. Nepal demographic and health survey 2001

    The report presents the results of the 2001 Nepal Demographic and Health Survey (2001 NDHS). The principal objective of the survey is to provide policymakers and planners with current and reliable information on fertility, family planning, infant and child mortality, maternal child health, nutrition and information on HIV/AIDS.
