This synthesis report is informed by findings from four individually-developed country briefs on violence on the basis of SOGIE in schools in China, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. It aims to raise awareness and mobilize support for advocacy among educators, research institutions, policy makers and activists at the national and regional levels.
Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is tackled head-on by the University of Cape Townʼs (UCT) Inclusivity Policy for Sexual Orientation, which was ratified in December 2017. The policy aims to create a campus environment for staff and students that is free from discrimination in all spheres, including teaching content and language, the university’s code of conduct, and culture.

The project set out to develop and pilot a survey tool, which second-level schools can use to evaluate the positivity of their school climate and culture in relation to attitudes towards difference and diversity, with specific reference to LGBT identity. It was envisaged that the tool would be particularly useful in preventing / dealing with homophobic and transphobic bullying.
The full GLSEN 2017 National School Climate Survey report includes information on LGBTQ middle and high school students' experiences, including: hearing biased language, from both students and educators; experiences of harassment and assault; anti-LGBTQ discrimination; effects of a hostile school climate on educational outcomes and psychological well-being; and the availability and utility of supportive school resources. This report aims to provide information about the concrete measures that all members states have taken to ensure inclusive education and to tackle discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and variations in sex characteristics. This research has been carried out by IGLYO in partnership with civil society organisations and education experts. It is intended to be a resource for governments to evaluate the current levels of inclusion within their own country, learn from good practice examples and build international commitment.

This report analyses over 2000 primary and secondary school inspection reports for 2015/16. The report’s main findings are as follows: -SRE was mentioned by inspectors in less than 1% of reports and PSHE in just 14% of reports, fewer than almost all other established subjects, including history (36%), geography (26%), music (31%), and art (31%). -Mentions of sexual health, safe sex, and related topics were almost entirely absent from inspectors’ reports, with only 1% of reports referring to these issues. …
