This report provides the first overview of education attrition and mortality trends not reliant on estimates, models or projections, but on primary data contained in government registers. As such there was no sampling frame and no statistical deduction in terms of attrition - only analysis of hard data.The aim of the study is to estimate gross educator attrition rates and trends, including an analysis of the causes of these by age and gender, in the public schools system in South Africa. The magnitude and dimensions of educaor attrition and its components, including mortality were examined.
This report presents findings of a study carried out to assess capacity issues in the context of the increasing incidence of disease in general and HIV/AIDS in particular on the public education sector. The report focuses on the following three key questions: What is the actual and likely impact of HIV/AIDS on teachers and other MOES staff? What is the actual and likely impact on the education of primary and secondary school students who are directly affected by the epidemic? What has been and what should be done in the future to prevent HIV infection among teachers and students as well as support for all those who are directly affected by the epidemic?
