In preparation for the 2019 International Conference on Learning Cities, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) is inviting senior researchers to submit proposals for background papers. The conference focuses on the theme of ‘Inclusion - A principle for sustainable learning cities’ and will take place in Medellín, Colombia, on 1–3 October 2019.
The overall objective of the conference is to identify and discuss effective lifelong learning policies and practices that lead to inclusive, safe and resilient learning cities. More specifically, the aims of the conference are to:
- develop a common understanding of inclusion as a part of lifelong learning and sustainable development;
- identify public policies and planning approaches that strengthen inclusion as a priority for lifelong learning at the city level, with a focus on vulnerable groups;
- share experiences on the implementation of local actions that support inclusion;
- document monitoring mechanisms to assess progress towards local inclusion strategies.
UIL requests written proposals for four papers, which should give attention to how formal, non-formal and informal learning can promote the inclusion of vulnerable groups at city level. There will be one overall paper in addition to thematic papers on three main groups:
- Youth at risk (NEETs);
- Digitally excluded populations;
- People living in slums and deprived neighbourhoods.
Proposals must be submitted by close of business (18:00) on 5 June 2019. Email proposals should be submitted to learningcities@unesco.org and not exceed 5 MB. The technical proposal and supporting documents must be in English, as must the final paper. The final paper should be completed before 27 July 2019.
