Films and Videos

The 'Digitizing Our Shared UNESCO History' project is digitizing 45 hours of 16mm film that includes over 100 film titles, some of which go back as far as the late 1940s. Additionally, 30 hours of video programmes from the 1980s which exist only on UMATIC cassettes are being digitized. An estimated 2000 titles in the collection still exist only on their original carrier.

Please note that the information you see about each film and video (i.e., its metadata) is being presented “as is”. It has been extracted from paper-based inventories and legacy databases. In some cases, important metadata (e.g., date, etc.) may be missing. We aim to improve the quality of the metadata over the course of the project. If you know something about one of the films, use the left hand menu to leave a 'reaction'.

The quality of the digitized videos is considered the best possible outcome given the state of conservation of the UMATIC cassettes at the time of digitization. All tapes had to be baked in a laboratory oven before they could be played-back; in some cases, cassettes were baked for a week or more.

Some minor corrective actions were taken during the digitization process, however, no restoration work was undertaken on any of the film or video items.
