International Expert Meeting

Conservation and sustainable use of the World Heritage property Historical Monuments of Mtskheta and its setting / Living Religious and Sacred World Heritage in a Historic Urban Context

The National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia and the Georgian Patriarchate, in cooperation with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre/ICOMOS/ICCROM/IUCN Steering group on Heritage of Religious Interest, will organize and host an International Expert Meeting “Conservation and sustainable use of the World Heritage property Historical Monuments of Mtskheta and its setting / Living Religious and Sacred World Heritage in a Historic Urban Context". It is scheduled from 12 to 14 May in Mtskheta and Tbilisi (Georgia).

The meeting will contribute to define the main principles for understanding the needs, challenges and best practices for the recognition and management of properties with associated sacred or spiritual values, including sites with living religious practices.

One of the main objectives of the meeting is to consider future steps for the sustainable management, protection and use of the World Heritage property ' Historical Monuments of Mtshketa and its surrounding cultural landscape.

The meeting is organized within the framework of the UNESCO Initiative on Heritage of Religious Interest and in response to the World Heritage Committee Decision 42 COM 7B.24 and 42 COM 5A adopted at its 42nd session (Manama, 2018), which invited the States Parties and other stakeholders to continue to support this Initiative, as well as its associated Marketplace projects developed by the World Heritage Centre.
