Established in Hamilton in 1924, Wintec is now one of New Zealand’s largest tertiary education institutes educating more than 20,000 students each year on-shore, and delivering multiple programmes off-shore with international partners. Successful global alliances and partnerships have been established and vocational programmes and assistance delivered across Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East and Europe. Our current NZ-based student cohort comprises 1000 international students from 53 countries. International partnerships with higher education Institutions include student recruitment, staff/student exchanges, teaching/learning resource development, joint research, articulated pathways, training, offshore delivery, campus management and a range of core consultancy and Technical Assistance.

Wintec provides hands-on, applied training and customized programmes to meet the changing needs of communities and their economies. The primary principles underlying Wintec approaches to teaching and learning are:

• Student-centred teaching to promote authentic learning

• Wintec presented at the Indonesian International Geothermal Conference and Exhibition in August 2017 in Jakarta. This is the fourth year Wintec has been involved in this event which sees government agencies, policy makers, key stakeholders, investors, service companies, academics and experts in the geothermal industry gather to share the latest developments, build professional relationships and exchange ideas.
• The team of hospitality students representing Wintec at the prestigious annual Nestle Toque d Or competition in July 2017 came away with bronze and silver medals. The National Chefs Conference was held in Dunedin earlier this month and saw our hospitality tutors Shannon Katipa and Stephen Roe attend, along with 80 other top chefs from around the country. The duo were there to learn the latest from the hospitality industry on a national scale while also networking with other industry professionals, including some from Australia.
• Our Centre for Sport Science and Human Performance has for the second consecutive year been awarded Gold recognition status from the American College of Sport Medicine “Exercise is Medicine on Campus” global project, in July 2017. The award is in relation to our Biokinetic Clinic which helps treat people suffering from chronic health conditions and sports injuries. Gold level recognition is the highest level of recognition and acknowledges the work we are doing in creating collaborations between healthcare and exercise professionals to provide physical activity prescriptions.
• Innovation that transforms societies is the theme for a two-day international symposium at our city campus this week on Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 July. The event will see global innovators from Europe inspire more than 150 sector experts to transform problems into opportunities and create new innovations from challenges.Wintec has formed successful working partnerships globally and locally with industry partners and communities and the 2017 ITPNZ (Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics) Symposium brought them together. https://www.wintec.ac.nz/about-wintec/news/article/2017/06/30/global-innovators-join-forces-at-wintec
• Wintec Design Hub Pilot was accepted by the Design Factory Global Network in June 2017, and will soon become New Zealand first Design Factory. The Design Factory teaching model at Wintec is based on the growing global network of design factories that began in Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland. There are now 15 design factories in the Design Factory Global Network across five continents. They are based in universities and research centres where students work with industry partners in positive learning environments to solve complex, real world problems. • In March 2017, Wintec hosted an Institute of Technology and Polytechnics (ITP) conference with a focus on Secondary Tertiary Partnership (STP). The conference looked at ITPs working together in this area to impact policy change at a national level. The workshop was organised and hosted by our Youth Pathways team and was attended by STP managers from a number of ITPs including Otago Polytechnic, Ara, Nelson and Marlborough Institute of Technology, NorthTech and Toi Ohomai. Representatives from the Ministry of Education (MoE) and Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) also attended. Wintec STP programmes, and new My Career Pathways programmes were presented in detail. As a result of the workshop, feedback will now be sought from TEC, MOE and NZQA on changes required in the STP space and how we can work together to achieve the required changes.
