Painter, draughtsman, engraver, architect, Lambert Lombard was above all an important humanist, artist and researcher, who introduced Italianism to the Netherlands notably by founding in Liege an art school whose programme was based on the work of the Academy established by Baccio Bandinelli at the Vatican. Known as the painter of the prince-bishops of Liege, he was a precursor of the Renaissance. His drawings are of an exceptional quality and quantity. Lombard, one of the most gifted artists of his time, was a scholar as well: numismatics, literature, mythology and fine arts were his fields of work and study. Lambert Lombard is thus an archetype of the Renaissance intellectual.
