Geology, Ecosystems and Biodiversity

The earth sciences and the history of the Earth offers insight into current climate change and sustainable management of earth resources. The International Geosciences and Geopark Programme (IGGP) of UNESCO promotes international collaboration in the geosciences with special emphasis on the issues of global concern, raise public awareness of the importance of the area’s geological heritage in history and society today and address important environmental and societal challenges with a societal orientation for sustainable development.

Biodiversity loss, along with climate change, is one of the great global challenges of our time. UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB) improves the sustainability of human-environment interactions, promote innovation in linking ecological knowledge to policies for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and strengthen principles and practices to minimize biodiversity loss to the consequences of climate change.
