PRESS ADVISORY: Artists’ vital contributions to Sustainable Development

Kris Sanguanpiyapand’s TEDxBangkok talk was itself performance art, relating in the context of a Peter Pan skit how he had overcome multiple hurdles to found Blind Theatre Thailand, encouraging cultural projects featuring blind and sighted people working together. The theatre is one of Kris’s several artistic endeavours – and the source of gainful occupation for blind people as well.

Speakers: Artists’ vital contributions to Sustainable DevelopmentAt the upcoming event “The role of culture for the achievement of 2030 Agenda” on 28 March, Kris will be among many performing artists and main speakers addressing the crucial role of culture to sustainable development, in the context of Thailand and the wider world. The event will take place in the context of the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development running from 27 – 29 March at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok.

Evidence has shown that culture can make significant contribution to human and socio-economic development, quality education, social inclusion, sustainable cities, environmental sustainability, and peaceful and inclusive societies. In addition, focusing on culture also helps development to be relevant to the local context. No development is sustainable without serious consideration to culture.

The side event, consisting of a series of performances and talks, will deliver concrete examples of how culture can contribute to sustainable development, especially to the SDGs that are the focus of 2019 Asia-Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development. It will also demonstrate how creative languages can raise awareness and engage people across all levels of society, to generate collective and innovative actions to address the issues that are pertinent to the sustainability of our world.

Key questions that will be addressed are: 

  • How culture and the arts in general can contribute to empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality?
  • What role creative education can play in building peaceful and inclusive societies?
  • How do creative districts contribute to reducing poverty and inequality in cities?
  • How artists can be agents of change and contribute to social cohesion and development for all?

Among the notable speakers will be Ambassador Lorenzo Galanti of Italy, landscape architect Yossapon Boonsom, artist and performing arts manager Sasapin Siriwanij, and Lorenzo Cognatti, creative director of GRUPPO JOBEL global artistic network. The event is being co-organized by UNESCO Bangkok, the Italian Embassy and Gruppo Jobel.
