National Launch of the 2019 Global Education Monitoring Report in the Russian Federation

The launching event of the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report “Migration, displacement and education: Building bridges, not walls” was organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation together with Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University), and UNESCO IITE on 10 April 2019 in Moscow, Russia. The presentation of the 2019 GEM Report was delivered by Ms. Katarzyna Kubacka, Research Officer of the Global Education Monitoring Report Team at UNESCO Headquarters (Paris, France), in the framework of the Moscow International Education Fair.

The 2019 GEM Report examines the education impact of all population movements. It also reviews progress on education in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In view of increasing diversity, it analyses how education can build inclusive societies. The Report covers policy issues that address seasonal migrants, rural school consolidation, intercultural curricula, refugee inclusion in national education systems and elimination of segregation, qualifications recognition, targeting of school funding, more effective humanitarian education aid and teacher preparedness for diverse classrooms in emergency. The report calls on countries to see education as a tool to manage migration and displacement and leave no one behind.

The launch was opened by the Rector of RUDN University Prof. Vladimir Filippov and moderated by the Director of UNESCO IITE Mr. Tao Zhan. Following the presentation of the 2019 GEM Report, there was a panel session with international experts from UNESCO IITE Governing Board, representatives from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Higher Education and Science of the Russian Federation, as well as RUDN University academicians and students. The discussion was continued by active participation of Mr. Boris Zhelezov, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Science and Higher Education), Ms. Victoriya Letunovskaya, Deputy Director of the Unit of International Cooperation, Department of International Cooperation and Public Relations (Ministry of Education) and IITE Governing Board Members Prof. Asha Kanwar (Canada), Ms. Dorothy Gordon (Ghana) and Prof. Maria Celicia Calanai Baranauskas (Brazil).
