New membership regulations for the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities

The UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) has released new membership guidelines that take effect as of 1 October 2018.

Since its inception in 2015, the UNESCO GNLC has expanded rapidly. To date, more than 200 members from 50 countries are part of the initiative. In order to ensure the steadfast commitment and progress of the member cities towards the implementation of lifelong learning, as well as to audit the network’s quality, the UNESCO GNLC has revised its membership procedures and requirements, for old and new members.

The new regulations include the acceptance of three new member cities per country per year. In addition, the applications will only be reviewed and accepted between March and April every year. Members of the network will also be required to submit a biennial progress report on their strategies, activities and initiatives towards promoting lifelong learning for all in their communities.

Socio-economic and cultural diversity has been and will continue to characterize the work of learning cities. Not all cities are at the same development stage and possess the same tools to develop into a learning city, yet the monitoring of progress is crucial for the cities to make lifelong learning a reality.
