Endorsement of Bethlehem Area Conservation and Management Plan

Institutional Development focuses on the reinforcement of the managerial capacities of technical staff of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities as well as relevant Civil Society Organizations. The effective and sustainable safeguarding of Palestinian cultural tangible and intangible cultural heritage as well as the promotion of cultural diversity are important means to foster social cohesion and inclusive economic growth.

The Ramallah Office provides its partners with technical assistance in the field of Culture, providing technical assistance in Cultural Policies and Strategic Planning, building national capacities of relevant Palestinian institutions, and implementing projects on the ground.

Through its thematic window on Culture and Development the Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund was a key enabler to achieve the first Palestinian Culture Sector Strategy, upgrade the National Plan for Palestinian Culture, review the National Cultural Heritage Law and including six bylaws, develop a draft of law protecting the Intangible Cultural Heritage, endorse the Charter on the Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Palestine, and develop Cultural Indicators.

UNESCO has contributed to the development of cultural and eco-tourism through the establishment of the first Landscape Eco-museum in Battir, based on the interaction of natural and cultural heritage sites, local communities and visitors, and the support to institutionalize the Network for Experiential Palestinian Tourism Organizations towards responsible long-term sustainable tourism.

Thanks to the efforts of the office, Culture was integrated in three proposed outcomes out of six in the first UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for Palestine, developed in 2013.
