Benefitting country(ies): Burkina Faso

Overview:

This major project enabled Burkina Faso to inventory around 1,300 living traditions practised by 60 ethno-cultural communities located in the thirteen regions of the country. The project was implemented in two major phases: a pilot phase that involved two regions with six ethno-cultural communities and a second generalization phase that involved all regions and national communities. Its principle objectives were to develop a national strategy for inventorying and promoting ICH; to sensitize communities, policy-makers and the public about the importance of ICH; to build stakeholder capacity in the safeguarding of cultural heritage; to draw up an inventory of ICH elements in the field; to identify ICH elements based on their state of viability; and to disseminate the results of the inventory at national and international levels via a database and website, and catalogues and brochures. Its implementation also required the development of a national strategy for inventorying and promoting ICH, and the establishment and operationalization of a supervisory structure to bring together all stakeholders involved in the safeguarding of ICH. Through this project, Burkina Faso laid the foundations of a sustainable framework for the safeguarding of living heritage in the country.
