Girls are Coding! UNESCO Celebrates International Women’s Day 2019 with Regional Girls Coding Competition

UNESCO Office Jakarta together with WOMEN WHO CODE and UNESCO L’Oréal For Women in Science organized the Regional GIRL Coding Bootcamp and Competition to celebrate the 2019 International Women's Day and to introduce and raise interest of school girls aged 8-12 years old to programming and to STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) field studies and possible careers choice in the future in Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Laguna. 87 schoolgirls participated first to a coding bootcamp using Hour of Code* dance party platform and entered the competition by a group of 3. A Jury constituted by members of WOMEN WHO CODE (Manila and Kuala Lumpur), L’Oréal, UNESCO and UNESCO L’Oréal for rising talent 2017 as well as the girls themselves voted for the best choreography.
On the International Women’s Day, 08 March 2019, four finalist from each city competed in the final round. The online event was not only joined by the students who participated in the Bootcamp but also joined by local coding ambassadors including from WOMEN WHO CODE (Manila, Kuala Lumpur) and A*STAR (Singapore) who shared their experiences in programming and career path in tech. Also L’Oréal For Women in Science rising talent 2017, Dr. Nazek Al-Atab from Saudi Arabia who gave presentation on her current works on the fabrication of 3D nanotube‐based nanoelectronics that will potentially overcome the decade‐long challenge in brain‐implantable electronics.

The winner of GIRL Coding Competition was the team from SD AL-Ikhlas, Jakarta Indonesia. The group consisted of three girls aged 8 to 9 successfully attained highest mark from jury and from the audience. The winner video can be watched on link below.
