UNESCO Director-General to visit Spain 14-15 January

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, will carry out an official visit to Spain on 14 and 15 January, marking the country’s commitment to UNESCO and its mandate.

On 14 January, Ms Azoulay—with José Guirao Cabrera, Minister of Culture and Sport of Spain—will visit Cordoba’s 10th century Caliphate City of Medina Azahara, an archaeological site inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List last year.

Alongside Carmen Calvo Poyato, Vice President of the Government of Spain (Deputy Prime Minister), and heritage experts, the Director-General will take part in the Los retos del patrimonio meeting on the potential of heritage later in the day.

In the morning of 15 January, Ms Azoulay will attend the Foro Nueva Economía in Madrid, which will bring together representatives of the public and private sectors.

The Director-General will then hold talks with Josep Borrell Fontelles, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, before meeting Pedro Sánchez, President of the Government (Prime Minister), and King Felipe VI of Spain.

Spain, a deeply committed Member State of UNESCO, has an extraordinarily rich and varied heritage with 47 sites on the World Heritage List. In the fields of education and science, the country also stands out with an exceptionally large number of UNESCO Chairs (65) and Biosphere Reserves (49).
