Standing Up against online harassment of women journalists - What works?

With gender-based attacks globally on the rise in the field of journalism, UNESCO is organizing an event on 18 June 2019 at its headquarters in Paris (Room IV), aimed at specifically addressing the issue of online harassment of women journalists. The event, structured into two interactive panel discussions, will serve as an opportunity for multiple stakeholders to raise awareness of the problem of the safety of women journalists, while also exploring practical and concrete ways to enhance it.
The increase in attacks against female journalists and the specific threats faced by women journalists, including sexual harassment and violence, both online and offline, is a growing concern. With countless victims of violence and intimidation, there is a pressing need to explore new ways to reinforce the safety of women journalists on the ground.

With the dual objective of highlighting the experiences of women journalists and exploring practical and concrete ways to tackle online harassment of women journalists, UNESCO is organizing an event that will bring together multiple stakeholders into two interactive panel discussions. Speakers will include women journalists who have been targets of online harassment, journalists associations, media houses, and legal experts.
The event will take place on 18 June 2019 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris in Room IV, from 3pm to 6pm, and will be in English and in French.

Seating for the public is limited. If interested in attending, kindly contact Saorla McCabe (s.mccabe@unesco.org) and Theresa Chorbacher (t.chorbacher@unesco.org) for information.
