Total private expenditure on education

Definition

Sum of direct payments from students/households and other private entities to educational institutions, in addition to expenditures such as: i) direct purchase of personal items used in education; and ii) subsidized household expenditure for the living expenses of the learner. Payments to learners/households by other private entities in the form of scholarships, grants or loans should not be included in total private expenditure, because such financial aid is internal to the private sector and should be netted out in calculating total private expenditure on education.
