Within the framework of CapED in Niger, the IBE is in Niamey (8-14 October), Niger to support the Ministry of Education in expanding and strengthening gender-responsive STEM education in the country.
Back in August 2017, we supported a successful workshop entitled "Using the IBE-UNESCO Gender-Responsive STEM Resource Pack to develop gender-sensitive STEM curricula". The workshop was facilitated by IBE at UNESCO’s International Symposium and Policy Forum Cracking the Code: Girls’ Education in STEM (28 - 30 August 2017, Bangkok, Thailand).
After that event, UNESCO CapED requested IBE’s support to strengthen a CapED plan in Niger. The CapED plan there is looking particularly at helping practitioners harness gender-responsive STEM education to improve retention rates and learning outcomes of girls in primary and secondary education, especially in STEM subjects.
Following the request from UNESCO CapED, the IBE will be involved in a series of activities with the Ministry of Education of Niger aimed at strengthening the capacities of secondary teachers and teachers’ trainers. The work will focus on refining learning materials through a more gender-responsive STEM education lens. Specifically, the IBE will participate in meetings with key stakeholders involved in the formulation of teacher training policies as well as in the training of teacher trainers in a gender-responsive approach to STEM education.
