Building correspondent networks across hard-to-reach areas
About the Project
The UNESCO “Empowering Local Radio with ICTs” project (2012 – 2018), supported by Sweden, built the capacities of 59 local radio stations, located in 10 African countries, by strengthening long-term skills of local radio journalists, technicians, volunteers, correspondents and station managers. Emphasis on the integration of ICTs allowed to modernize the radio stations’ operations. It improved the quality of programmes, the interaction with listeners, mostly poor people in rural areas, and extended the geographical coverage of news through the creation of networks of local correspondents, composed of trained communities’ members.
