Medellín, Colombia’s second-largest city, will host the fourth International Conference on Learning Cities, scheduled to take place next year.

Today, Medellín is recognized for its innovativeness: in 2013, it won the Wall Street Journal and Citi ‘City of the Year’ award and, in 2016, the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize in recognition of its efforts in tackling the myriad urban challenges it faced.

Education and learning has been a main driver to create a liveable, vibrant and sustainable urban community in Medellín, transforming the city  into a model of urban social integration. The commitment continues as Medellin is becoming a learning city and engages as a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. The International Conference on Learning Cities will provide an opportunity to share this experience with the rest of the world.

The biennial International Conference on Learning Cities provides government officials, city representatives and education experts worldwide with a platform for policy dialogue and exchange of best practice in advancing education and lifelong learning at the local level, with a particular focus on promoting learning cities as a key driver of a more inclusive and sustainable urban future for everyone.

The event in Medellín follows three successful conferences: in Beijing (China) in 2013, in Mexico City (Mexico) in 2015, and in Cork (Ireland) in 2017.  Surrounded by natural beauty, with mild year-round temperatures and the dedication to education and lifelong learning, Medellín will be the place to set another milestone towards ensuring lifelong learning for all and promoting the UN Sustainable Development goals at local level.  More details on the dates and theme will be announced in the due course.
