Consultation on the UNESCO Pakistan Country Strategic Document 2018-2022

Islamabad, 25 April 2019: In accordance with the Pakistan One United Nations Programme III (OP III) 2018-2022, Pakistan's national development priorities, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UNESCO Islamabad launched its Country Strategic Document (UCSD) 2018-2022. The document presents UNESCO's strategic framework for engagement with the Government, other UN Agencies, development partners, and civil society to respond most effectively to Pakistan's development needs, priorities, and aspirations. It provides a programmatic framework for UNESCO's interventions in Education, Culture, Science, and Communication and Information sectors in Pakistan for the next four years. Read more...

Sahafi Summit held in Karachi to commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2019

Karachi, 3 May 2019: The first-of-its-kind national journalists' convention brought together nearly 100 journalists working in print, digital, and broadcast media from all over Pakistan.

The first--ver Sahafi Summit was co-organized by Digital Journalists of Pakistan and Media Matters for Democracy at the Centre for Excellence in Journalism (CEJ)-IBA in partnership with UNESCO Pakistan, the European Union, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Embassy of Sweden in Pakistan, and the DW Akademie in Karachi on 02-03 May 2019. Read more...

National Commission for Human Rights nominates focal persons for collecting data and reporting crimes against journalists

Islamabad, 25 April 2019: The National Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Chaudhry Muhammad Shafique has announced the nomination of focal persons in all provincial and federal police departments to collect data on crimes against Journalists. Mr. Shafique was speaking at the closing ceremony of a workshop with duty bearers on promoting safety of journalists. He shared that official notifications had been issued in this regard. NCHR will also be initiating the process of establishing federal and provincial level working group on freedom of expression and safety of journalist. Read more...

A platform for youth and young professionals in Science Engineering Technology and Innovation (SETI) for DRR launched

Karachi, 21 February 2019: UNESCO in collaboration with NED University of Engineering and Technology launched U-INSPIRE Pakistan at the gala dinner of first South Asia Earthquake Engineering Conference. Under the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR), UNESCO initiated to work with youth and young professionals in Science Engineering Technology and Innovation (SETI) for DRR along with then many work related to empowering youth. In 2018, UNESCO, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and Global Science and Technology Advisory Board UNISDR, facilitated the establishment of the platform called U-INSPIRE (Youth and Young Professionals on Innovation, Science, and Technology Platform for Resiliency); UNESCO expected this initiative to be replicated in the region. Read more...

A National Dialogue on women in science brings together stakeholders to promote women and girls participation in science

Lahore, 12 February 2019: UNESCO in partnership with UNWOMEN, Pakistan Alliance for Maths and Science and Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) organized "National Dialogue on Women in Science" on 11 - 12 February 2019 in LCWU Campus, Lahore, Pakistan. The event was inaugurated on 11 February 2019 that is International Day for Women and Girls in Science. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring this day, to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. Read more...

Launching of the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report 2019

November 22, 2018 - Islamabad: Following the global launch on 20th November 2018 in Germany, the 2019 GEM Report was launched in Islamabad on 22 November 2018 at Serena Hotel Islamabad. UNESCO Islamabad Office in collaboration with UNHCR hosted the launching ceremony, which was well attended by a wide range of stakeholders from education sector, development partners, media and civil society organisations. Girls' Right to Education Programme

UNESCO Islamabad office has been working on promotion of Girls' Education in most marginalized areas of Pakistan through its multi-year flagship programme titled, "Girls' Right to Education Programme in Pakistan (GREP)". Funded by multiple donors including the Government of Pakistan, the programme aims at improving access to, retention and quality of girls' primary education in most marginalized areas of Pakistan. Strengthening the Resilience of Kalasha Communities through protecting & Promoting their Cultural Heritage

UNESCO Islamabad, in collaboration with the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and in partnership with Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, has been working on a project aimed at strengthening resilience of Kalasha community in Chitral district through developing and promoting sustainable ecotourism. Kalasha people, inhabiting three beautiful valleys - Bomboret, Rumbur and Brir - have been adversely affected by forced conversions, decreased economic activity and underwhelming disaster risk management policies in the region. The project, currently completing its inception phase, intends to complement community-led capacity-building workshops and trainings with government-supported infrastructural changes that facilitates in regulating tourism and maximizing economic growth through heritage management.
