This paper examines how policies and strategies to address school-related gender-based violence have evolved since 2000, when gender-based violence within education was largely invisible. It traces remarkable progress in research, policy and programmes, particularly since the mid-2000s when evidence around the globe exposed high levels of many forms of violence. This report presents the results of a study on School Related Gender Based Violence (SRGBV) undertaken by the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) in partnership with the Plan International. The study gathers empirical evidence on the magnitude and nature of SRGBV and help-seeking behavior of girls and boys aged 12-17 years in five countries – Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan and Vietnam. In addition, it also explores the perceptions and attitudes of key adults, teachers and parents, towards SRGBV.

This policy paper argues that school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) is a global concern preventing children, especially girls, exercising their right to a safe, inclusive and quality education. The paper calls for a systematic and harmonized approach to identify, monitor and understand SRGBV, as well as strong policy interventions to develop targeted solutions to address the problem effectively.
Swaziland is one of the sub-Saharan African countries affected by Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and HIV and AIDS, with women facing greater risk compared to men.
