Claude Lanzmann’s film: The Four Sisters
On the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration of the Victims of the Holocaust, UNESCO has organised, in partnership with ARTE at Synecdoche, the preview screening of The Four Sisters: The Hippocratic Oath – Ruth Elias, in the presence of the director Claude Lanzmann, the first of four films which follow the stories of four women who survived the destruction of European Jewry.
Over four poignant films, Claude Lanzmann unveils the survival stories of four women who escaped from Nazi destruction, whom he had originally interviewed for Shoah.
This film portrays Ruth Elias who was 17 when the Germans invaded Czechoslovakia. Hidden in the countryside under a false identity, her family was betrayed and deported to Theresienstadt in April 1942. Ruth met her boyfriend there and married him in the camp, while her relatives were deported to Auschwitz. During the winter of 1943, she was transported to Auschwitz in a transit of Czech families. Some time later, as her fellow prisoners were led to the gas chamber, the eight-month-old pregnant woman was miraculously selected to go to Hamburg, to clear the rubble of a bombed refinery. When her pregnancy was discovered, the Nazis sent her back to Auschwitz, where she fell into the hands of Dr. Mengele.
