Civil Society Forum

UNESCO's 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions recognizes the fundamental role played by civil society in the achievement of its objectives. Therefore, the Convention's governing bodies ensure the involvement of civil society organisations (CSOs) in the implementation of the Convention and encourage their participation at statutory meetings, for instance through the organisation of a biennial Civil Society Forum.

The second edition of the Civil Society Forum will take place on Tuesday 4 June 2019 from 9am to 6pm, before the seventh session of the Conference of Parties (UNESCO Headquarters, 5-7 June 2019).

This Forum provides a framework for exchange and cooperation among representatives of CSOs with interests and activities linked to the Convention so that they can discuss their current concerns and issues related to the implementation of the Convention. The main goal of the Forum is to give CSOs an opportunity to make proposals to the Conference of Parties on issues or problems that they consider to be priorities and that they would like to see reflected in the work of the Convention's governing bodies.

As part of this year’s Forum, four thematic workshops are organised, each lasting two and a half hours. The themes of the workshops, which were developed following a participatory consultation process with CSOs, are the following:

  • Workshop 1:  How to improve the diversity of cultural expressions in the media in the   digital age? Examples of good practices.
  • Workshop 2:  How to strengthen the Convention's international cooperation and assistance mechanisms in partnership with CSOs?
  • Workshop 3:  How can UNESCO Chairs and CSOs collaborate to contribute to the development of public policies for culture and sustainable development?
  • Workshop 4:  How to overcome obstacles to the mobility of artists and cultural professionals?
