UNESCO offers 3 categories of staff:

Professional

We are looking for competent, dynamic and flexible professionals with strong personal integrity, who are fair, impartial and respectful of cultural diversity. In addition, they must be able to think creatively, be proactive and responsive.

UNESCO has two categories of Professionals:

  • International Professional staff are hired internationally and work in expert and/or managerial roles that require a significant level of technical expertise. Professional staff are expected to work across the globe.
  • National Professional Officers are nationals of the country in which they serve and perform functions of a professional nature requiring local knowledge, expertise and experience.

UNESCO employs professionals in the fields of: Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture, Communication and Information and Programme Support, Administration and Management.

Requirements

  • Education

An advanced university degree in education, culture, science, social and human sciences, communication, business administration or a related field.

  • Languages

Fluent English or French (the two working languages of UNESCO) and a good working knowledge of the other language are required. Knowledge of Arabic, Chinese, Spanish or Russian is an additional asset.

  • Previous experience

    • Junior level (P1/P2 or NOA/NOB): 2 to 4 years of experience
    • Middle level (P3/P4 or NOC/NOD): 4 to 10 years of experience
    • Senior level (P5 and above or NOE): 10 to 15 years of experience (including management experience).

Junior Professional Officer (JPO) / Associate Expert (AE) Programme

The JPO/AE Programs provide the opportunity for young university graduates and young qualified professionals to acquire training and work experience in technical cooperation and in management and administration of multilateral programmes and projects either within UNESCO's Field Offices or at Headquarters. JPO/AEs are recruited under bilateral agreements between UNESCO and the donor countries, generally for a duration of 2 to 3 years.

Requirements

  • Age

Candidates are normally under the age of thirty-two when applying for a JPO/AE position.

  • Education

A university degree in education, culture, science, social and human sciences or communication, or in a field of direct relevance to the management and administration of an international organization.

  • Languages

Fluent English or French and a good knowledge of the other working language. Knowledge of Arabic, Chinese, Spanish or Russian is an additional asset.

  • Previous experience

An initial professional experience is an asset, but is not mandatory.

  • Nationality

Candidates for the JPO/AE programs are normally nationals of the donor country funding their assignment to UNESCO. Applicants from developing countries may also be considered by certain donor governments.

General Service

The functions in the General Service category include administrative, secretarial and clerical support as well as specialized technical functions such as printing, security and buildings maintenance. General Service staff are locally recruited in Headquarters or in Field Offices/Institutes.

We are looking for competent, dynamic and flexible persons, who are proactive and responsive. We are looking for people with strong personal integrity, who are fair, impartial and respectful of cultural diversity.

General Service staff work to support activities in the fields of: Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture, Communication and Information and Programme Support, Administration and Management.

Requirements

  • Education

Graduates of a secondary, technical or vocational school and, as the case may be, secretarial, business or commercial qualifications. In certain cases, equivalent experience may be retained.

  • Languages

Fluent English or French (the two working languages of UNESCO) and a good working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of Arabic, Chinese, Spanish or Russian is an additional asset.

  • Previous experience
  • Junior level (G1/G3) - one to three years of experience
  • Middle level (G4/G5) - three to seven years of experience
  • Senior level (G6/G7) - Eight years and above experience
