Building peace in the minds of men and women

Circulation of cultural property and shared heritage:
What new perspectives?

At a time when issues around displacement of cultural property from the countries of origin are being considered worldwide, consultation, dialogue and cooperation among States and museums on access to shared heritage need to be fostered.
Through an International Conference held at UNESCO Headquarters, on 1 June 2018, UNESCO aimed to promote the protection of cultural heritage and act on its role as convenor, by providing a forum of discussion and exchange of ideas. Building on examples of joint cultural projects and innovative cooperation experiences and partnerships, the conference provided a space for political and cultural representatives and high-level scholars and experts to share their insight, debate on issues related to the circulation of cultural property, identify solutions and formulate specific recommendations on the way forward. The conference also addressed the historical, ethical and philosophical aspects in order to approach and examine the issues from different angles.
