Extrabudgetary Projects on Freedom of Expression - Guillermo Cano Isaza Foundation

Guillermo Cano Isaza Foundation

The Guillermo Cano Isaza Foundation was created in 1996 on the 10th anniversary of the assassination of Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano Isaza. It works for the defense and promotion of press freedom in the world, through recognizing journalists and supporting those who are threatened, and promoting research related to freedom of expression and journalism.

UNESCO is leading innovative projects around the world thanks to voluntary contributions it has received from donors in support of freedom of expression.

Awarded annually on World Press Freedom Day, the Prize honours a person, organization or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially when this has been achieved in the face of danger. It is supported by the Guillermo Cano Isaza Foundation and the Helsingin Foundation.

Voluntary contributions have strengthened UNESCO’s work in freedom of expression in dozens of countries around the world.
