Intergovernmental Panel convenes to set priorities for international cooperation on mitigating the effects of Harmful Algae

The Fourteenth Session of the IOC Intergovernmental Panel on Harmful Algal Blooms (IPHAB) was held at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, from 24 to 26 April 2019. The Panel reviewed actions completed during the intersessional period and set priorities for 2020-2021.

During the period 2020-2021, IPHAB will focus on the following issues:

• Capacity building;
• Facilitating further development of early detection, warning and forecasting of harmful algal events;
• Continuing the development of a periodic Global Harmful Algal Bloom Status Report;
• Implementing a Global UN InterAgency Ciguatera Strategy for improved research and management;
• Developing guidance on harmful algae and desalination of seawater;
• Enhancing international coordination of biotoxin monitoring, management and regulations;
• Providing guidance on algal taxonomy;
• Enhancing the overall understanding of the relationship between harmful algae and fish kills.

The Panel also reviewed activities at regional level taking into account the different levels of support of the various groups and networks depending on whether or not they are affiliated to one of the regional IOC subsidiary bodies: Sub-Commission for Africa and Adjacent Island States (IOCAFRICA), Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (IOC WESTPAC), Sub-Commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (IOCARIBE), Regional Committee for the Central Indian Ocean (IOCINDIO).

Dr. Joe Silke (Ireland) was elected as Chair and Dr. Alexandra Silva (Portugal) was elected as Vice-Chair of IPHAB.
