21 May 2019

On 20 May 2019, UNESCO and the European Commission DG DEVCO organized the first Steering Committee Meeting of the UNESCO-EU Project “Silk Roads Heritage Corridors in Afghanistan, Central Asia and Iran - International Dimension of the European Year of Cultural Heritage”.

The meeting brought together project stakeholders from Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, including representatives from the beneficiary countries of the project, as well as officials from the EU Delegations in the beneficiary countries, DG DEVCO and UNESCO field offices.

During this first meeting, the Steering Committee reviewed the components of the project, and exchanged ideas on ongoing and planned activities.

The role of the Steering Committee is notably to monitor and coordinate project implementation and identify synergies with other projects implemented in the beneficiary countries.

Started at the end of 2018, the EU-funded Silk Roads Heritage Corridors in Afghanistan, Central Asia and Iran project is designed within the framework of the European Year of Cultural Heritage. Through cooperation and exchange of good practices along the Silk Roads, it aims to strengthen capacities for safeguarding tangible and intangible cultural heritage, raise awareness, promote the common cultural heritage on the Silk Roads and use the heritage as a foundation for sustainable development, including through the development of sustainable heritage-based tourism.
