Coastal erosion is a major challenge, which affects the integrity of this World Heritage Site. In 2015, the Japanese government donated an amount of 200.000 USD to initiate emergency measures on Gorée Island.
Driven by UNESCO in partnership with the Senegalese Ministry of Culture and Communication, this one-year project which has started in October 2016, has three main components:
- The Consolidation of breaches in the South East Wall and the South Contention Wall
- The Enhancement of this World Heritage’s visibility with the improvement of information to visitors
- An international fund raising “Save Gorée” for the protection and conservation of Gorée’s coastline.
This project align with UNESCO’s actions concerning the protection and the promotion of cultural and natural heritage (1972 Convention) and contributes at meeting the needs of Gorée in terms of maritime erosion, valorization of the site as well as its sustainable management.
