Auschwitz Memorial
Karl Gorath (b. 12 Dec 1912 in Bad Zwischenahn, no. 124630) was deported to from KL Neuengamme on 16 October 1942. He was registered both as a homosexual and a political prisoner. During evacuation of Auschwitz he got to KL Mauthausen where he was liberated.

Karl Gorath was transferred to Auschwitz from Neuengamme camp where he worked as a nurse in the camp hospital as he refused to give smaller rations of bread to sick Polish prisoners there. As it was considered a mutiny, he also became 'a political prisoner' in Auschwitz.

Karl Gorath was one of at least 77 prisoners of the German Auschwitz camp who were persecuted for their homosexuality. At least 43 of them died in the camp.

Around 50,000 homosexual men were convicted by German courts between 1933 and 1945. If the police felt that insufficient sentences had been handed out, they often committed the men to concentration camps. There, they were identified by pink triangles
