This report examines World Bank financing for the Education Sector HIV/AIDS Response in Sub-Saharan Africa up to mid-2004. The review was undertaken in response to a consultation with African countries which identified a need for information on how the World Bank education sector was responding to the epidemic through its sectoral assistance programs and through its participation in the Multi-Country HIV/AIDS Program (MAP). Documents and data were reviewed, and key informants interviewed. There are four key findings of the review. …

Each specific handbook deals with two major topics: i) A general explanation of the cultural approach to HIV/AIDS; ii) Specific sections focus on the levels of action to be considered: strategy/policy, project design and field work. The present handbook comprises two major divisions: situation analysis and ways and means for building appropriate strategy/policy. It includes cross-references to the other three handbooks.

An AIDS education programme was developed and evaluated in a high school in a socio-economically disadvantaged, urban, African area in South Africa.
