Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014 at the Grande Arche de La Défense, (Paris France) the French Association of World Heritage sites is organizing a seminar on "urban planning systems, a regulatory tool for the protection and management of World Heritage sites and cultural landscapes ".

This seminar is organized with the support of the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy in partnership with the World Heritage Bassin Minier Mission and the World Heritage Val de Loire Mission. The aim of this one-day seminar is to discuss and explore the relationship between urban planning, planning policies, landscape planning and heritage protection tools. The aim is to foster heritage focused planning policies.

In France, the World Heritage properties are mostly protected by heritage protections regulatory systems such as the Historic Monuments Law (Monuments Historiques 1913), buffer zone law (Abords 1943), protected sites law (Sites classés 1930), conservation areas (Secteurs sauvegardés 1962), or the protected areas law (ZPPAUP 1983& AVAP 2010). However, since 1992 and the creation of the "cultural landscapes" category, there is an increasing number of large-scale sites on the World Heritage List. The size and scale of these sites and cultural landscapes address new protection and management issues that call for an adaptation of the tools and regulatory systems so as to combine heritage protection with planning tools and develop new types of planning documents (Schéma de Cohérence Territoriale, Plan Locaux d’Urbanisme, etc.).

Target groups: World Heritage site managers, planning and heritage conservation institutions and professionals, local governments, development and planning stakeholders.
