    According to the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) India has 5.2 million HIV-positive people and an HIV-prevalence of 0.9 percent of adults - about the same as the global average, or the sero-prevalence in North America, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. India's epidemic is concentrated in some 200 districts, most of them in six of the country's 28 states - namely Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Manipur, Nagaland and Tamil Nadu - where HIV-prevalence is more than one percent. There are also limited data on the number of children infected with HIV in India. …

Its purpose is to assist the Government, civil society organisations and development partners in the development of policies and programmes for on-going support, and in the monitoring of community-based assistance to families and children affected by HIV/AIDS.     Officially launched in January 2004, the German-Burkinabe Sexual Health and Human Rights Programme (PROSAD) was chosen for write-up in the German HIV Practice Collection because, over the years, it has become a uniquely sustained, comprehensive and results-driven effort to protect and empower women, youth and children. It has helped raise their own and public awareness of their human rights, including their sexual and reproductive rights, and has provided them with a range of services and mechanisms that allow them to take advantage of those rights.
