Nokrek Biosphere Reserve turns 10!

A plaque commemorating 10 years of Nokrek Biosphere Reserve was inaugurated in Daribokgre village in the buffer zone, by the State Minister for Education, Forest and Environment, the Hon’ble Lahkmen Rymbui, in the presence of state and central government officials; local leaders and community members including a large group of school children; and Mr Guy Broucke who represented UNESCO.

Following the event, a planning workshop took place with additional participation of several other stakeholders.  Nokrek will prepare its mandatory 10-yearly periodic review and many activities are planned in areas of conservation and livelihoods diversification aiming at sustainability.  Population pressure is a significant challenge for the region, particularly with the jhum practice of slash and burn.

UNESCO New Delhi Head of Science encouraged the management of the Biosphere Reserve (BR) to also further develop communication plans to raise broad awareness about the meaning of a Biosphere Reserve, across sectors and communities, and to consider building a narrative around the Biosphere Reserve’s unique features such as the mother plant of all citrus trees, and a Nokrek BR ‘brand’; and continue to involve a growing range of stakeholders from all sectors and include civil society and the private sector in the management of the BR.
