Freedom of expression (FOE) and freedom to information (FTI) are fundamental principles for the development of sustainable knowledge societies, and serve as a cornerstone for democracy and good governance.

UNESCO contributes to the promotion and monitoring of FOE and FTI by helping build independent media associations and networks; strengthening media landscapes characterized by diverse media types; and enhancing dialogue among media professionals about media ethics, professional standards and journalists’ working conditions. The organization builds awareness and support for FOE, FTI and the safety of media professionals by collaborating actively with media associations and relevant civil society organizations. The celebration of World Press Freedom Day on 3 May every year, and the award of the UNESCO–Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize on that day are major events on the UNESCO calendar. UNESCO also provides advisory services and technical assistance to Member States to help them develop and apply policies and regulatory frameworks conducive to FOE, press freedom and FTI.
