While different people and organizations understand differently what information and communications technology (ICT) means, it is generally acknowledged that ICT is an umbrella term that includes any information and communication device or application and its content. Such a definition encompasses a wide range of access technologies, such as radio, television, satellite, mobile phones, fixed lines, computers, network hardware and software. 

ICT in Education is both a necessity and an opportunity for driving the progress on the Global Education 2030 Agenda. The importance of ICT lies in its ability to open up a wide range of services, transform existing services and create greater demand for access to information and knowledge, particularly in underserved and excluded populations, such as persons with disabilities. ICT in Education can contribute to universal access to education, equity in education, delivery of quality learning and teaching, teachers’ professional development, efficient education management, governance and administration.

UNESCO New Delhi Office supports the efforts of its Member States to design and implement effective, evidence-based ICT in education policies and national plans. It aims to ensure activities on the ground respond to the unique needs of countries and local communities alike and are guided by collaborative and consensus-driven approaches. Special care is taken to support the most disadvantaged populations and guarantee the equity, quality and relevance of education for all.

UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau for Education (UNESCO Bangkok Office) and UNESCO New Delhi Office are currently supporting the Governments of Sri Lanka and Bhutan in developing their ICT in Education Master Plans.
