Under basic and engineering sciences, UNESCO New Delhi Office primarily contributes to the follow-up to the World Conference on Science (Budapest, 1999) and towards reinforcing national and regional capacities in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology and engineering science and technology. UNESCO has organized various regional level trainings/workshops in diverse fields such as industrial mathematics, environmental chemistry, lightning physics, microbial genetics, bio‐pesticides, simulation models for engineering and technology, renewable energy etc.; helped the Member States in production of science education curriculum frameworks; and produced and tested teaching‐learning materials in biology, environmental chemistry, electronics manufacturing engineering, physics.

The UNESCO Regional Centre for Biotechnology Education, Training and Research, established through an agreement between the Government of India and UNESCO in July 2006 is located in New Delhi and is designed to be a Centre of excellence in biotechnology with intimate contributions from the countries of the region and academic institutions from the rest of the world. It provides a meeting place where innovation, enterprise, and industrial development will germinate. This Centre would be beneficial to all countries in the region including India in carrying out biotechnology research of highest caliber and developing knowledge-rich highly skilled human resource.

UNESCO New Delhi assists national and local organizations responsible for scientific and technological development and innovation in the elaboration of science and technology (S&T) strategies, policies, projects and evaluations, and in S&T capacity building, aimed at sustainable development.
