Little Adventures
Sesame Street’s unique initiative to tackle gender inequality in STEM

Little Adventures is bringing some of the coolest things about our world - like gravity, buoyancy, space and motion - out of the classroom and into the living room and is challenging gender inequality at the same time. A multi-media initiative developed by the creators of the iconic children’s show Sesame Street, Little Adventures is tackling the substantial gap between girls’ and boys’ achievement and participation in maths and science. Using Sesame Street’s furry, funny muppets Abby and Lola, it shows girls that science and maths are fun, exciting subjects accessible to everyone. For more than 40 years, Barefoot College has been doing remarkable things for girls and women in rural locations across the world. They train women as solar engineers, innovators and educators, giving them the tools to transform lives in their villages. Their remote night schools also give girls working to support their families the opportunity to learn and break out of the cycle of poverty. Reclaiming the hard hat for a new generation of female engineers

Think engineering is for men? Think again. That’s the message from The Think Pink Hard Hat Challenge set up by WomEng. Hands-on workshops encourage 13-17 year old girls to challenge gender stereotypes in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) by re-claiming the hard hat as so much more than a symbol of masculinity. Decorated with personal messages, hopes and dreams, these hard hats demonstrate that being a girl in STEM is about much more than gender, it’s about the individual value you can bring to the table. Providing STEM degree scholarships for African girls

The Visiola Foundation just ran a five week coding boot camp for girls from across Africa. Teaching everything from HTML and CSS to server-side development with Node JS, the camp is just one of several initiatives the Visiola Foundation runs alongside its flagship degree scholarship programme. This programme provides scholarships to some of Africa’s top universities for girls and young women wanting to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM). http://bit.ly/2vVs4vJ

Women and girls of colour face unique challenges in science, technology, engineering and maths. All too often, these challenges are overlooked by other initiatives aimed at getting girls involved in STEM. The SeRCH Foundation is working to change that. By highlighting stories of women in colour in STEM, the SeRCH Foundation encourages girls and women of colour to explore STEM and consider pursuing careers in these subjects. 2016 saw the launch of an exciting Education for Sustainable Development Policy in Guyana. Addressing the quality of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education for girls, it recognises that improvements must be made if the Sustainable Development Goals are to be achieved. Spearheaded by Guyana’s Ministry of Education, the resulting programme has been expanded to Belize, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Trinidad! STEM training workshops for primary school teachers have also been launched as a result in Antigua, Barbados, Jamaica, Dominica, St. Kitts and St. Vincent, empowering mostly female teachers to in turn empower the girls they teach. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of mathematician, Maryam Mirzakhani, who passed away recently. We celebrate her legacy below.

We’re remembering Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to win the prestigious Fields Medal (considered the “Nobel Prize” of mathematics), who sadly died in July from breast cancer. The Iranian-born mathematician was recognised as a leader in the field of theoretical mathematics and her work impacted many fields beyond mathematics. Prof Dame Frances Kirwan of the University of Oxford praised Maryam’s award win saying, "I hope that this award will inspire lots more girls and young women, in this country and around the world, to believe in their own abilities and aim to be the Fields Medallists of the future."
