UNESCO
UNESCO, EDUCATE AND GIVE EVERY CITIZEN THE DESIRE AND THE MEANS TO ACT …UNESCO’s commitment to sustainable development started when the Organization was founded in 1945. In 1972, the Organization created the first biosphere reserves. There are now close to 700 in 120 countries. More than 200 natural sites are protected by the renowned World Heritage certification. Since 2005, UNESCO has been recognized globally as the lead agency for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). It coordinates the implementation of the Global Action Programme (GAP) on ESD, as official follow-up to the United Nations Decade of ESD (2005-2014).Education for Sustainable Development empowers learners to take informed decisions and responsible actions for environmental integrity, economic viability and a just society, for present and future generations, while respecting cultural diversity. After having mobilized governments and other United Nations agencies on this issue, contributed to train teachers and encouraged actions by NGOs, UNESCO now intends to more than ever highlight and communicate the extraordinary work performed every day by citizens from all walks of life: those who transmit to youth or their fellow citizens the values, behaviours and ways of life required to build a viable future.Because no change can be made without education. -
