ICOMOS community mourns the passing of Prof. Dr. Michael Petzet, its Honorary President, who died unexpectedly on Wednesday, 29 May 2019. He dedicated his life to the protection and conservation of the world's cultural heritage – for which he always advocated with strong opinions and clear purpose.
Michael Petzet studied art history and archaeology in Munich and Paris from 1951 to 1958 and after his doctorate worked in museums and the Palace and Gardens Administration in Bavaria. In 1974, he was appointed Bavarian Conservator General, an office he held until 1999. From 1988 to 2012, he was President of the German National Committee of ICOMOS and from 1999 to 2008 President of ICOMOS international.
A specialist on French architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the art and cultural heritage of Bavaria (in particular on the castles of King Ludwig II and the architecture of historicism), Michael Petzet also made major contributions to the principles of contemporary monument conservation worldwide through his numerous publications and writings. His ICOMOS presidency saw the production of a large number of publications – notably in the “Monuments & Sites” series, which included important works such as “The World Heritage List: What is OUV? Defining the Outstanding Universal Value of Cultural World Heritage Properties” and “The World Heritage List: Filling the gaps - an action plan for the future”.
This is the fourth volume in the ICOMOS series on the Thematic Studies on Rock Art. The three previous volumes have focused upon: Latin America and the Caribbean (2006); Rock Art of Sahara and North Africa (2007) and Rock Art in Central Asia (edited by Jean Clottes, 2011).
The scope of the current volume is the Rock Art of East Asia, from Siberia in the north to Malaysia in the south and stretching as far west as needed to cover all regions lying to the east of the previous volume in this series that concerned the Rock Art of Central Asia. The countries covered by this volume are Far Eastern Russia, the Republic of Korea; Japan; Mongolia; China; Vietnam; Laos; Cambodia; Thailand and Malaysia.
ICOMOS is releasing its final report on Project Anqa which seeks to preserve endangered cultural heritage sites in Syria through their digitalization using state of the art technology, build capacity in the region, promote the transfer of knowledge and create permanent architectural inventory units.
The project resulted in the creation of a web platform which includes virtual tours of 7 endangered heritage sites along with comprehensive data on the sites.
Project Anqa which means “phoenix” in Arabic is a joint initiative of ICOMOS, the non-profit organization CyArk, the Carleton University Immersive Media Studio and Yale University’s Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (IPCH).
Following the earlier call for the Scientific Symposium Co-Chair, which has since been appointed, expressions of interest are now invited for four (4) further volunteer positions as International Theme/Stream Co-Chairs for the Scientific Symposium to be held between 5 and 9 October 2020 as part of the 20th Triennial General Assembly of ICOMOS (GA2020) in Sydney, Australia under the overall theme “Shared cultures – Shared heritage – Shared responsibility”.
ICOMOS is pleased to share the document European Quality Principles for EU-funded Interventions with Potential Impact upon Cultural Heritage, available for download here and at http://openarchive.icomos.org/2083/
This document stems from the work of an expert group assembled by the ICOMOS, under the mandate of the European Commission and in the framework of the flagship EU Initiative of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, “Cherishing heritage: developing quality standards for EU-funded projects that have the potential to impact on cultural heritage”.
